Athleticism isn't the only feat that should be awarded at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Every four years, the Summer Games bring the greatest athletes in the world together to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in their chosen sports, and along the way, they share touching moments that are truly gold medal-worthy.
And this year is no different. Feelings of pride, excitement and determination were already running high when the Games kicked off with the Opening Ceremony on July 26, with over 10,000 athletes sailing down the Seine for the ambitious event. And to top off the monumental moment, Lady Gaga and Céline Dion—who hadn't taken the stage since sharing her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in 2022—set to deliver heart-rendering performances.
Over 17 days, the Games see the culmination of all the blood, sweat and tears athletes endured over the years in order to compete at this level.
Simone Biles will return to the gymnastics floor after stepping down from the vault at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and showing the world the importance of putting her mental health first. U.K. tennis player Andy Murray will play his final rounds of tennis representing his home country after announcing he would be retiring from his professional career.
But they aren't the only ones putting it all on the line. Paralympic medalist Hunter Woodhall will return to compete in the 2024 Games alongside wife Tara Davis-Woodhall, whose skill will be put to the test in long jump event. Plus, diver Tom Daley will jump headfirst into Olympic waters, USA men's basketball players Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Kevin Durant will shoot for gold as a team and breakdancers Sunny Choi, Logan Edra and Jeffrey Louis will make their Games debut.
Through it all, these legendary athletes will celebrate triumphs, cry over devastating losses and even smile wide for a few selfies that are sure to go down in history.
